Tour a Renovated Dream Urban Backyard

Marija Main - Sunday, July 17, 2016

Earlier this week, I was thrilled to get a personal tour of my neighbour's recently completed full backyard renovation. After weeks of watching truckloads of dirt, stone, wood, trees and plants shuffled in and out of their property, I see the final result which is nothing short of show-stopping! The transformation reveals an ideal urban yard which suits everyone including the parents, kids and the family dog.

The new backyard design perfectly compliments the lush gardens surrounding the historic Toronto home. The new yard actually does not appear "new" which makes for even a better renovation outcome. The backyard combines structure, seating areas, quiet reflection nooks and play areas across multi-level platforms.

The significant design decision was to forgo a real lawn and install artificial grass in the backyard. This solution has proved to be a huge improvement allowing their family dog and children to play, run and stomp to their heart's content!

Every usable nook and cranny is optimized and serves a purpose for storage, entertainment or visual interest. An overlooked area against the wall of the house serves as a perfect potting area.

This home shows us that it is possible to design an outdoor space keeping all family members in mind and finding the perfect balance between formal elegance and casual charm.

Marija, these photos are beautiful - a big congratulations to your neighbours for creating such a beautiful outdoor space. I think you are spot on describing this as 'casual charm', as it looks well manicured but still very livable. This post is definitely making me envious of city dwellers with backyards!

Thanks Nicole!
I'm glad you liked the tour! I think whether you have a city balcony, or big urban backyard the key is to make the most of what you have. I think this reno is awesome as it utilized every bit of the yard to suit their family's needs.

Absolutely love the use of photos here, really helps bring the post to life. I recently helped my family redesign my home backyard and its interesting to see how others chose to fill their outdoor space and in this case it looks amazing!

This is the cutest urban oasis! I love how it makes everybody in the family happy. My family and I recently redid our backyard and it is now our own urban paradise. Especially with the hot summer it's great to have this outdoor space to enjoy the weather while it lasts! Hope your neighbors enjoy it!

Wow that backyard looks phenomenal! Great job on getting those photos, they look great. Having a backyard like this in the city can really help with stress that comes with living in a city, so kudos for illustrating that. Also showing how well the limited space can be optimized is very important.

Thanks and it is also pretty low-stress living in The Beach in Toronto :)
